Get the Facts on Summer Reader (and Wandoo Reader, Too!)

Posted by Susan M. Brackney

“I heard I have to stop using Summer Reader now!” (Not true.)
“I heard Wandoo Reader is just for kids.” (Nope!)
“I heard you can’t use CSLP or iRead with Wandoo Reader.” (Not true!!)

The summer reading rumor mill has been running at full speed lately, and we want to set the record straight about Summer Reader and Wandoo Reader, too.

Here are answers to some of the most common questions we’ve gotten from our current Summer Reader customers about the future of Summer Reader, the differences between it and Wandoo Reader, and more.

sr2Q: How does Wandoo Reader relate to Summer Reader?

A: Wandoo Reader is the latest reading program platform from Evanced Solutions. Rather than continue to update the original Summer Reader, we have created this new program to accomplish the same goals. Wandoo Reader can rightly be thought of as Summer Reader 2.0. It’s a completely new take on summer reading, employing all the lessons we’ve learned from a decade of helping libraries track and incentivize reading.

Q. Is Summer Reader going away?

A: Evanced is committed to maintaining and supporting Summer Reader at least through 2017—but we are convinced most libraries will want to change over to Wandoo Reader (aka Summer Reader 2.0!) sooner. Please note, aside from necessary security updates, we are no longer adding new features to our classic Summer Reader product. Instead, new enhancements will be added continually to Wandoo Reader.

Q. What are the differences between Summer Reader and Wandoo Reader?

A: We encourage current Summer Reader customers to attend one of our upcoming Wandoo Reader Webinars to learn how the summer reading platforms differ and what a transition from our old to new software entails. Our next session will be held:

Wednesday, April 1st | 1-2 pm EST

And here’s a fairly comprehensive chart on some of the main differences between Wandoo Reader and Summer Reader.

Q: Is Wandoo Reader just for kids? Do we have to use the game? Are there teen or adult features, too?

A: Wandoo Reader is not just for kids, and, although it does have gamified elements, you don’t have to use them. Beginning with the spring 2015 release, Wandoo Reader will have three available themes:

• Superheroes—includes “gamified” elements. (Click here to see a demo of the superhero theme.)
• Robots—includes “gamified” elements. (Click here to see the robot theme.)
• Simple theme—clean and classic reading log suitable for all ages; does not include gamified elements. (Click here for a sneak peek.)

Wandoo Reader allows for programs with users over the age of 13 to be run with special social media sharing features for increased patron interaction. Likewise, the unique challenge creation system enables you to create a fantastic game-like experience that will be age-appropriate for any level program.

We’ll add new themes every year to appeal to younger players, but the Simple theme affords an easy, fun experience for readers of all ages.

You can run as many different programs as you wish with Wandoo Reader, ensuring your library can provide a custom program for all your patrons, regardless of their date of birth!

Q. Can I use CSLP or iRead themes in Wandoo Reader?

A: Yes, absolutely. You can use CSLP and iRead themes in both Summer Reader and Wandoo Reader.

Q: Is Wandoo Reader something I could implement year round? Or is it strictly a summer reading tracker?

A: Wandoo Reader, like Summer Reader before it, is designed to be used at any time throughout the year.

A subscription to Wandoo Reader is good all year long, and you don’t pay based on how many people participate or how many programs you run. That gives you the freedom to run as many programs as you want, as many times as you want, and to attract as many participants as you want.

Some vendors charge more based on the number of participants, and they make you pay to run programs at different times of the year, but Wandoo Reader can be used for spring, summer, fall, winter, or year-round reading—all for the same price.

Wandoo Reader has a durable patron record that enables readers to participate in episodic programs and still keep a lasting record of everything they’ve been reading.

Additionally, the same patron can be registered for up to five active programs at once. This allows you to run a year-round or school-specific club, while still letting the participants join the summer program as well.

Q. Do I have to buy a new subscription to use Wandoo Reader?

A: Current subscribers of Summer Reader can switch to Wandoo Reader for free. (Keep in mind, there is no data migration from Summer Reader to Wandoo Reader, in part because of the episodic nature of Summer Reader. Program data didn’t persist from year to year in the classic product, so a move to Wandoo Reader will be a fresh start.)

Libraries that access Summer Reader through a state agreement should contact their state representatives for details about what their particular state is doing in regards to Wandoo Reader.

To inquire about a switch to Wandoo Reader, existing customers should contact Evanced Support. They will walk you through the process and choose when will be the right time to switch over to the new system.

Think you might like to continue to run both Summer Reader AND Wandoo Reader at the same time? There would be a charge, in that case. You’ll want to contact Sales for specifics, but here’s a general idea of how pricing would go for existing Summer Reader customers, if you decide to run both programs at once.

The price to add Wandoo Reader is annual and varies, depending on your service population. Current Summer Reader customers: you can expect the price to add Wandoo Reader to be what the list price maintenance fee would be for you, if you had purchased Wandoo Reader outright.
