See you in the New Year!
The next version of Summer Reader will have many features that have been requested for a while. We’ll have a mobile-web enabled version of Summer Reader (smart phone users, rejoice!), a system for indicating EXACTLY what prize is awarded to patrons (and how many are left) and new style sheets. We’re also adding new features based on the feature voting we did, but we won’t announce those changes until next week. As for the new style sheets, the change is significant and I asked Doug, our Summer Reader programmer, to tell you more. Here’s what he had to say:
The changes in the page layouts from a table-based structure to a div-based structure will make style sheets developed in Summer Reader 2010 and earlier versions incompatible with Summer Reader 2011. This was a decision that we had to make in order to bring our pages up to an acceptable standard for HTML page layouts. All program style sheets and/or templates will be overwritten with the CSS from the new layout (one theme will be applied to all existing CSS style sheets) when your application is upgraded to this year’s release.
The page layout changes along with applying standard naming conventions to CSS classes will make CSS development in Summer Reader a much easier process than in years past. We are also in the midst of developing new themes for Summer Reader 2011 that we hope will help ease the transition from SR 2010 to SR 2011.
If you are a member of your library tech staff, then the above information is pretty self explanatory. If you are a non-tech person managing your Summer Reader site, essentially what Doug is saying is that we wouldn’t recommend making changes to your Summer Reader site for your 2011 summer programs until you’ve received the Summer Reader upgrade. That will be released to the public in late February/early March. When the upgrade is available, you can contact support and they will upgrade your site for you. Keep an eye on the blog for notifications related to the upgrade release.

Write review haiku
That’s right – if you’d like to be in the running for the review writing contest, you’ll need to write your review in Haiku format. The Evanced staff will select some of their favorites and post them on the blog for readers to comment on which they like best! The winner will receive a prize.
Of course, if you are not feeling the haiku mojo, then write a review as usual and you’ll be included in a random drawing for that week.
