Summer Reader for All Seasons

Everyone has that one gadget, website, kitchen tool, clothing accessory, thing that they just love and use all the time. We hope that at your library, that thing is Summer Reader.

Summer Reader has a lot of uses and we’re seeing a lot of new usages and program ideas for it. I’ve written up this PDF to help you learn more about what you can do with Summer Reader. Do you have other ideas? Did I miss something? Then let me know in the comments section or email me!

You can download the PDF “Summer Reader for All Seasons” here.

Happy Halloween!

Evanced Solutions Staff Interview: Rick Chambers

One day, Sabrina (our training consultant) and I were sitting at lunch and we thought…how on earth we can we add just a bit more Evanced to the world?  And so, Evanced Solutions staff interviews were born.  Over the next several weeks you will find staff interviews being posted on our blog.  They’ll make you laugh, they’ll make you cry, and they’ll make you say, “My goodness they’re a bit dorky, aren’t they?”  But we wanted to give you a chance to know more about us and what we all do exactly.

First up, is Rick Chambers our Support Team Manager. (He’s a rock star in his spare time, by the way…)

Have a good Monday,

Summer Reader Sneak Peek, Voting, and Doug. What more could you ask for?

We’ve been talking to you lately about your product feature requests.  How you submit your feature requests, how you find out if they’ll be used in an upcoming version, and how we decide what feature requests to implement (or not).

Over the next month or two, you’re going to see a series of blog posts from me (Christine) and Doug, our Summer Reader developer.  We’re going to talk about features we’re adding to the next version of Summer Reader, the features we aren’t adding (and why) and then we’re going to let you vote for the features that we are thinking about adding but want your input on.  This series of blog posts is the first step in a longer process that will eventually lead to our customers having huge input into features and consistently voting and commenting on features.

So…let’s talk to Doug a bit about the “big three”.  These are the things we’re definitely adding to Summer Reader in this next version.  Doug will be adding more features than just these, but these are the things that will be most noticeable to you and your patrons next year.

CAI: Hi Doug!  What can you tell customers about what you’re working on with Summer Reader?

DK: Hi Chris…sure…there are three things I think they’ll really like.  One is a point and click style editor.  This will allow customers to click on any part of the software and a style editor will pop up that will let them change colors, fonts, and other things with just a couple of clicks.  This eliminates the need to edit style sheets, but still allows for the look and feel of the software to change.  If customers are comfortable with changing their CSS, they can still do that, but if they aren’t, the editor will make things easier for them.

CAI: So this is great for libraries that may not have the time, staff, or technical training to change their Summer Reader instances a great deal.  That’s going to be really helpful for those libraries that call us and say “we’re just not that techie”.  I like it!  What else?

DK: Another thing we’ve started development on is a mobile web enabled version of Summer Reader.  This will allow library patrons to log into their Summer Reader account using their cell phones mobile browser and track their reading, add reviews, and interact with their Summer Reader site.

CAI: Will you need beta testers for that?

DK: Yes, probably in early December we’ll be asking for people to do testing for us on the mobile web version of Summer Reader.

CAI: What else do you have planned?

DK: The other big thing that’s being worked on is a prize information/prize management screen.  It allows libraries to input prize descriptions and then allows prize messages to patrons to identify the exact prize they’re winning.  It also tells staff exactly what prize to award patrons when they are distributing them.  For libraries that worry about prize inventory, it’s a big help.

CAI: That’s great.  Thanks!

Keep checking back on the blog for more information on the features you can vote on — coming soon!
