Tie A String Around Your Finger…

I was talking to my young niece recently about something she had to remember for school and I said, “Well, I guess you’ll have to tie a string around your finger…” She looked at me as if I had gone utterly insane. Apparently kids don’t know about the old string-around-the-finger memory trick.

What does that have to do with anything? Summer Reader passwords! That’s where I’m going with this…

I was at the New Jersey Library Association Annual Conference and libraries were talking about how they help young readers remember their Summer Reader passwords. First and foremost, we always recommend that you turn on the password reminder system we have in Summer Reader. However, if you want to create reminder cards as a back up plan, we think it’s a great idea!

Here are two ideas from the New Jersey librarians I spoke with. First, some images of a small, folding tent card that can fit into a wallet:

The above images are the reminder card of the South River Public Library, NJ.

Here’s a PDF of a similar concept from the Toms River Branch of the Ocean County Library.

How does your library help users remember passwords – not just for Summer Reader but any library resource?

Robot Names and Reindeer Games

MR20 green REV compressed 202x300 Robot Names and Reindeer GamesOkay, no reindeer games, but it caught your attention, right? We ended up with quite the list of robot names from the survey we posted:

BookeBot
MARC
Marian
E.S. Einstein
Vance
BookBot
Bob
Book Cube
BookArm
Iron Woman
Poetry In Motion
Book Find
Ironbrarian
E. Motion Less
BookFinder
O.T. (for Orange Thing)
Les E. Motion
Deweybot
Sir Cut

After a bit of thinking and back and forth at the office, we’ve come up with an idea we want to run by you. When an order is placed, you can choose to name the robot inside of BranchAnywhere. Your choices are:

Marian
MARC
Dewey
or….whatever name you would like

After we receive your name request, the name of the robot can then be stenciled on the robot before it is installed in BranchAnywhere.

This gives you room for creativity and even a chance to run a marketing campaign asking your community to name the robot.

Thanks to all those folks who helped us by providing suggestions. We appreciate that we have a community of customers that work with us to create better products!

Two Minute Tutorial…

I developed a brief two minute Summer Reader tutorial for a customer and wanted to share.  If you have staff or volunteers that will be adding information to patron reading logs this summer, this might help!

If you’ve created tutorials you want to share, let us know! We’d love to post them.
